Mission trips are unpredictable. Most times, you are at the mercy of the need that is there and being led by your heart. So when our mission trip leaders told us we were heading to the most populated areas of the jungle to minister and pray for people, we were both excited and nervous of what we will encounter.
The plaza was a busy area in the middle of Iquitos, a town in the jungles of Peru. While walking around, we saw a group of at least 75 young people watching a rap battle take place. There were young guys in the middle, waiting for their turn to jump in and freestyle. Nick, an American friend of mine, is an aspiring gospel rapper and saw this as a great opportunity to join – in English.
He was nervous. We were all nervous for him, but we encouraged him to be bold in this moment. I mean, that’s why we came here, right? This was also the perfect opportunity for our new Peruvian brother, Jonathan, to show his skills as well. He was probably the most nervous out of all of us, but he loved to rap and was just looking for courage and an outlet to share what Jesus had done for him.
Watch the video and see that we were all on fire that night. We couldn’t believe what just occurred! God showed up in an unconventional way, and it forever touched the hearts of many. Most importantly, though, it touched Nick and Jonathan’s heart. They discovered a boldness to spread the Gospel through an avenue that they know and love.
