The Promise Keeper

“The Lord came to Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what He had promised.”

Genesis 21:1 HCSB

I want to share with you a love story about a woman named Sarah.

Sarah was married and her husband was pretty established.  He loved her dearly and in return, she followed his lead.  On the surface, it seemed like Sarah had everything she needed and wanted.

But on the inside, Sarah was unfulfilled.

Sarah wanted desperately to have a child.  She knew how much it would mean to her husband, but this was the one thing she was unsuccessful at.

Maybe Sarah could withstand being without children earlier in life, but as the years went on, it became more difficult.  When she looked at herself in the mirror, she saw insecurity, disappointment, and pain.

But God, in His infinite love, made a promise to Sarah and her husband that they would conceive.

Now, you would think that was enough to lift her spirits and keep the faith, but because she couldn’t fathom it, her mind just made it untrue.

But God still pursued her.

Even through her demonstrated lack of faith in the midst “waiting on God,” He still pursed her.

Even when she mocked Him out of her doubt, He still pursued her.

Sarah was the one He wanted to give this promise to, despite her attempt to give it to another woman who seemed more qualified. Sarah was the one He adored enough to call her “princess.”

And in His perfect timing, she became pregnant.  She wasn’t just pregnant with a child. She was pregnant with the forefather that would lead to Jesus Christ – the Savior of the world.

That’s why the scripture at the top of this post means so much.

Instead of being disappointed in what is NOT happening around us – the broken promises, the false hope, and the pain of days gone by without progress – we can be confident in the One who keeps His promises.

Our God is faithful.  His word will not return to Him void. He’s our Promise Keeper.

Bible commentary often talks about the faith of Sarah’s husband, Abraham. But here, I see a love story between a woman and her God.

Sarah is the every woman. She is me (definitely me!) and she is the one reading this post who is hoping for things unseen and promises that haven’t yet come to pass.

Continue to hold onto God’s promises in your life.  He’s faithful. And His blessings will be beyond your wildest dreams.

If there is someone in your world who needs to be encouraged, feel free to share this message with them! In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you.
